Best Third-Place Teams, Explained.

The trickiest part of a 2026 World Cup bracket. Eight of the twelve third-placed teams advance — here is how they are picked and how to call them right.

Why third place matters now

With 48 teams in 12 groups, the top two from each group qualify automatically — 24 teams. But the Round of 32 needs 32. The other eight spots go to the eight best third-placed teams across all 12 groups. So finishing third is no longer the end of the road; for most groups it is still a live ticket to the knockouts.

How the eight are chosen

After the group stage, all 12 third-placed teams are put into one table and ranked. The order is decided by points first, then goal difference, then goals scored — the usual tiebreakers. The top eight in that mini-table go through; the bottom four go home. Four third-placed teams miss out by the finest margins, which is what makes this so hard to predict.

How to predict them

Look for third-placed teams that still managed a win, or stacked up draws without getting hammered. Because goal difference is the big tiebreaker, a team that lost heavily to a group favorite is in danger even with the same points as a rival. When you are filling out your bracket, give the edge to third-placed sides that kept their games tight and nicked a result.
