The World Cup 2026 Format, Explained.
The 2026 World Cup is the biggest ever. Here is how the new 48-team format works, who advances, and the dates that matter — in plain English.
The biggest World Cup ever
For the first time, 48 teams play in the World Cup — up from 32. It is co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, runs from June 11 to July 19, 2026, and packs in 104 matches. That is a lot more football, and a lot more to predict.
12 groups of four
The 48 teams are split into 12 groups, A through L, with four teams each. Every team plays the other three in its group once, so each side plays three group-stage matches. That is 72 group games before the knockouts even begin.
Who advances to the knockouts
The top two teams in every group go through automatically — that is 24 teams. Then the eight best third-placed teams across all 12 groups also qualify, bringing the total to 32. It is a new wrinkle worth understanding, because those third-place spots can swing your whole bracket.

The knockout rounds
From the Round of 32 on, it is single elimination: Round of 32, Round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, and the final, plus a third-place play-off. Win or go home. One slip and a favorite is out — which is exactly where brackets are won and lost.
Key dates
The tournament opens on June 11, 2026 at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, and the final is on July 19, 2026. Group-stage matches come thick and fast in the first two weeks, so if you are playing a prediction game, get your picks in early.
Now you know the format — put it to work and fill out your bracket.
